It seems like fate that the month I start a blog about fashion I have been given one of the most recognised and beautiful bags ever made, a Hermes Birkin.
Sorry I’m still a bit excited about the fact that I can walk around proudly with one of these on my arm. I know women get criticised for their obsession with bags but I love knowing I own something that is such a huge part of fashion and has so much history attached to it.
I cannot take the credit for earning the amount of money to pay for this amazing bag I need to add though, my wonderful hard working boyfriend gave it to me for my birthday last week. Other than the fact that I was almost wetting myself that I had got it I was also (soppy moment now, sick bags at the ready) really happy that he knows me so well that I didn’t even mention to him that I have always wanted one, he knows me that well. Don’t get me wrong, I was dropping slight hints, cough ALEXA about what I do really like in a bag cough MULBERRY but I never expected in a million years for that to be there on Wednesday morning.
So my first blog is dedicated to the gorgeous man in my life and the lovely bag I now own, as modelled by the always stylish Olivia Palermo in this picture. In case you dont know the story of how the Birken was created the story goes that in 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. She had just placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment of her seat, but everything fell out as she did so, causing her to jump up and grab all the contents. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for her, based on an 1892 design. She used the bag for herself then later decided she didnt like it anymore!! Nevertheless, the bag has since become an icon. (quote from Wikipedia)
